Inconspicuous Weapon Awareness and Recognition Course
This course is designed to familiarize
today's EMS Professionals as well as police officers in America's growing culture of hidden and edged weapon
attacks. These attacks are becoming more and more common among the law
enforcement community. Street Training recognizes that these dangers are
increasing to EMS personnel. What we hope to show you during this course are
some weapons used commonly on the street by criminals and emotionally disturbed
people. We also hope to bring to light the ways that these weapons are hidden on
the body and how they may be employed against EMS personnel. This behavior has
been commonplace in our correctional facilities for many years. While
incarcerated, prisoners often use their time developing edged weapon skills to
be used upon unsuspecting victims. With this in mind we should prepare ourselves
by becoming aware of how this is accomplished.
During this class we will discuss the
edged weapon prison culture. All of which employ tactics whose sole purpose is
to exploit the mistakes made by their victims. Victims can be anyone from a
common citizen to law enforcement officers to the EMS professional trying to
render assistance. We will also explore the edged weapon cultures of today's
street gangs with heavy emphasis on the specific martial arts training that is
totally designed around edged weapon fighting skills. We will be discussing how
foreign military knife fighting skills have found their way to the American
streets.
Attendees will be introduced to hidden
weapons that are designed to look like ordinary household objects. Items such as
canes, calculators, lipstick tubes, bracelets, hairbrushes, and key-chains are
normally collected by EMS personnel at a scene. Those items are then transported
with the patient into hospitals and clinical settings. These items are produced
both domestic and abroad. All are readily available to the general public.
Attendees will learn how weapons can be hidden on a subject's body to fool law
enforcement officers during searches. We will also try to give you some basic
skills on how to pick up on such items by making the student aware of their
existence.
Weapon awareness is an invaluable tool
that the EMS professional should have. The only way one can hope to counter
these attacks is by being prepared for them. This training is one of those ways.
It dovetails beautifully with prior training in EMS safety and awareness for the
seasoned professional. It will also assist the entry level personnel whose
skills are still in developmental stages.
This course is a four hour block of
instruction although it can be modified to two hours if need be. It will consist
of classroom lecture, a video presentation and hands-on segments where students
will be able to view a variety of these weapons and how they are used against
us. Student participation is greatly encouraged so all may learn from the
experiences of others. All segments of the course will be conducted and
monitored by the training staff to ensure the safety of all participants. We do
not use firearms, chemical agents or explosive devices in our
presentation.
